Welcome to our AAHGS Low Country and Gullah Geechee Chapter website! AAHGS stands for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving African-ancestored family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity through research, education, and community outreach. AAHGS strives to preserve and promote the history and genealogy of African Americans, encouraging scholarly studies in local and family history. Our chapter's charge is to assist anyone interested in pursuing family history research for and about peoples of African Ancestry, in the Low Country and Gullah Geechee region of South Carolina. It is where history, culture, and research connect!
We strive to connect people to their ancestry, foster an understanding of African American history, and strengthen the bonds within our community. By preserving and sharing stories, we ensure that the legacy of African American resilience, culture, and contribution is never forgotten.
The purposes of this organization are:
* To encourage scholarly studies in local and family history
* To encourage individuals who desire to share genealogical and historical expertise to enhance the heritage of African Americans
* To host workshops and seminars, that present informative speakers on history, genealogy, and cultural aspects of our heritage
* To support and carry out the objectives and policies of the national society
